Do You Want to be an I-STAR?

Campus Visits is recruiting excellent students to serve as Illinois Admissions Representatives (I-STARs). All I-STARS will serve on student panels, provide tours of campus, and assist with on-campus recruiting events. Students may apply now to begin training in the Spring and must be available to work during the summer (either full or part-time) and then continue in the fall semester.  Ideal candidates would have experience with public speaking, strong oral communication skills, an ability to learn information quickly, are involved on campus, and enthusiastic about Illinois. We are seeking candidates with diversity in college, major, ethnicity, areas of involvement, and geographic hometowns. Looking for Summer Employment?!?

Division of General Studies – Summer Registration Computer Lab Peer Advisor

The Division of General Studies is seeking students to aid with summer registration by helping academic advisors assist incoming students with registering for classes for the fall semester. Computer Lab Peer Advisors will:
·         Assist students with registering for fall classes in UI Integrate Self Service
·         Assist students in identifying appropriate General Education courses

A successful candidate must be available weekdays from June 3 – July 10, 2013 from 1:00pm – 4:30pm (approximately 15-20 hours per week) and Saturday, June 8th from 9:00am – 4:00pm. There is also a mandatory training that is scheduled for May 16 & 17 from 9:00am – 4:30pm.

The pay for this position is $8.25 an hour.

Required qualifications:
·         Strong communication skills
·         Demonstrated ability to work well with others
·         Knowledge of Course Explorer website
·         Knowledge of UI Integrate

Preferred qualifications:
·         Former DGS student
·         Basic knowledge of Illinois General Education requirements
·         Junior or senior class standing

We’re looking for anyone interested in helping new Illinois students adjust to campus!
The only requirements for this position are:

2.5 cumulative GPA
                  One University professional recommendation
                  Attend one of three trainings (April 11, 20, 25)
                  Be a student at Illinois both Spring and Fall 2013

Thinking About Taking International Coursework This Summer?

International Transfer Credit Review Process
International coursework cannot be formally reviewed until it has been posted to a student’s academic record. So students submitting syllabi for formal review must also submit a copy of the DARwin report proving that the course(s) in question has/have indeed been posted to the student’s academic record.

Furthermore, the course syllabus must include the following information:
(a) Course abbreviation/rubric, number, and title, when applicable
(b) Course description, textbook information, student assessment, a detailed topical outline, and lab information and outline, when applicable

Students will be contacted for any missing information. If that information is not provided, the course information will be sent out for review as is, and the articulation based on that information will be final.

 Looking for Ways to Volunteer?

The Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) Ambassador Program applications are due Tuesday, February 12th. This 8-week non-credit course is open to first-year and sophomore students from any college or major. The program focuses on introducing students to the fields of volunteerism, philanthropy and social entrepreneurship from a theoretical perspective with experiential learning opportunities.

Students will volunteer, assist in planning volunteer opportunities for other Illinois students and community residents, provide support to the Campus and Community-Wide Day of Service recently promoted in the Chancellor’s January 22nd email, and complete a project related to the field. Sessions include training on leadership, communications, diversity, career development, innovation, and planning large-scale service events.

CREATIVE WRITING AWARDS

The English Department sponsors and administers two annual undergraduate literary competitions in Short Fiction and Poetry.  Depending on available funding, there will be 3-4 prizes in Fiction and 2-3 in Poetry this year.  Past prizes have ranged from $100 to $1000.  As soon as we have specific funding numbers available, we will announce them at our website:

Contest rules are as follows:

Short Fiction:  no contestant may submit more than one story (7500 words, maximum length)

Poetry:  no contestant may submit more than 200 lines, as a single poem or a group of poems

Only University of Illinois undergraduate students are eligible to compete.  To be considered for a prize, submissions must adhere to the following rules.  All submissions must be sent to the following email address: sdavenpo@illinois.edu.  Depending on your entry (poetry or fiction), the subject line must read as follows: UNDERGRAD POETRY or UNDERGRAD FICTION (not both).  If you enter in both categories (poetry and fiction), you will need to send separate emails.    Your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, net id, status (undergrad), and UIN number must appear in the body of the email.  Your fiction OR poetry entry is to be contained in one attachment (doc, docx, or rtf only), the name of which should be as follows: contest category followed by your last name, such as FICTIONJONES or POETRYJONES.  Your name should not appear in the attachment itself.
