Interested in Secondary Education?!?

For secondary education minor applicants:
This email is only for sophomore and juniors who plan to apply THIS SPRING to the following program:  The Secondary Education Minor (for biology, chemistry, English, math, history, physics, and geology teaching).  If you are not planning to apply this spring, please do not RSVP.

You must attend one of the following mandatory meetings if you are planning to apply to the secondary education minor.  This is the best way for you to get information about how to actually apply to the minor in the spring semester.  I will go into detail about the requirements for the application and how you will submit your application to the College of Education.  This meeting will be the only chance that you have to ask questions about the application, I will not be answering individual questions about this so that I do not bias the process.  Please reserve your spot at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/5430088 by no later than November 23rd and save one of the following dates on your calendar.  You only need to attend one meeting.

Tuesday, November 27th
5-7pm
1002 Lincoln Hall

Or

Wednesday, December 12th
5-7pm
1092 Lincoln Hall

For Bachelor of Arts in the Teaching of a Foreign Language (BAT) applicants:
This email is only for sophomore and juniors who plan to apply THIS SPRING to the following program:  The Bachelor of Arts in Teaching Foreign Language (BAT) in Spanish, German, French, Chinese or Japanese.  If you are not planning to apply this spring, please do not RSVP.

You must attend the following mandatory meeting if you are planning to apply to the BAT.  This is the best way for you to get information about how to actually apply to the BAT in the spring semester.  Please reserve your spot at https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/5430088 by no later than November 23rd and save the following date on your calendar.  If you cannot attend this meeting due to class conflicts, you should email me and let me know so I can try to get the information covered to you.

Thursday, November 29th
5-7pm

ATTENTION: BAT prospective students have to submit an 8 semester plan as part of your application.  I previously suggested that you get this done before you attend the mandatory workshop but since I will be out of town next week and the following week is Thanksgiving break, I no longer expect that this will be done before the meeting on the 29th.  You will need to have this done before you apply by the Feb. 1st deadline.

Thanks everyone,
Adva

Boren Scholarship Session
The University of Illinois National and International Scholarships Program will be hosting an information session on National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren undergraduate study abroad scholarships on Friday, November 30 at 3:00 in room 514 at 807 S. Wright Street. We will provide participants with information about the program and tips on filling out competitive applications. The campus application deadline is January 16 for any study between May 2013 and May 2014 (all students are eligible for semester or year-long programs while some students may be eligible for summer intensive language programs as well). Students are encouraged to begin writing application drafts before winter break.

The Boren provides study abroad scholarships of $6,000-$20,000 for a full academic year or $4,000-$10,000 for a semester for U.S. citizens to study in Asia, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East on almost any study abroad program. These are merit-based scholarships (approximately 1 in 5 eligible applicants receive awards including multiple University of Illinois students every year). In order to receive the scholarship, award winners must enter into a service agreement requiring that they attempt to work in a paid position for the federal government in an area related to national security—generally the Departments of State, Defense, Homeland Security, or the Intelligence Community within three years of graduation (deferrals possible/encouraged for graduate study). Winners also receive priority-hiring status. Further information is available at http://www.topscholars.illinois.edu/prestigious/nsep.html

Please direct questions to David Schug by email at topscholars@illinois.edu or at the fifth floor, Illini Union Bookstore Building, 807 South Wright Street.

 Interested in the Khorana Program?!?

The University of Illinois is participating in an India-Illinois research exchange called the Khorana Program.  It’s geared toward STEM, agriculture, medicine, and public health students who wish to spend their summer 2013 (June and July) conducting research – in this case conducting research abroad.  The program is run through UW-Madison with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC).  Students do not receive academic credit.

Last summer, UIUC hosted 4 Khorana scholars from India and we will host even more this coming summer.  We would also like to make it a true exchange program by sending Illinois students to India this summer.

The funding for Illinois students going to India is very good – accommodations and meals are covered for all participants, and most or all undergrads will get either airfare covered or a $500-1,000 stipend.  Some grad students will get both the stipend and airfare.  And the Charles Wert India-Illinois scholarship through International Programs and Studies might be able to cover at least some of the students’ out-of-pocket expenses. Going to India next summer through the Khorana Programs seems to be extremely affordable.

I have attached a flier with additional information for students.

Please let me know if you have questions!

Looking for a Challenge? Want to earn some cash?!?

November 2012 is the time to apply for the Library Mobile App Student Competition that will be held in January andFebruary 2013.  This is a call for undergraduate students to enter the competition.

Visit the web site at www.library.illinois.edu/studentapps for the competition details and to apply.  Apply by Nov 17, 2012 for preferential consideration.  Successful applicants will be notified by January 10, 2013.

No coding experience is required for this competition; all that is needed are your great ideas for creating a killer mobile app to improve library services.  Read on for more information and visit the web site…

Challenge: Design a mobile app to enhance student use of library resources and services.

The Library Mobile App Competition is designed to explore solutions to significant problems libraries are facing in making their collections and services available to students and researchers whenever andwherever they are needed.  Undergraduate student teams will investigate these problems and have the opportunity to design mobile solutions that will enhance access to the millions of items and extensive research expertise available through the University Library system.  Teams will compete for prizes and have the opportunity to have their great ideas rewarded and recognized.

No technical background or programming experience required!  Student Teams will be asked to come up with models for mobile applications, some of which will later be coded by Library staff into fully functioning mobile apps. The competition provides a venue to express your creativity and gain practical experience solving realworld problems faced by academic institutions.

Prizes: $750 for the first place team, $500 for the second place team, and $250 for the third places team.  Additionally, all participants will have anopportunity to receive a $10 gift certificate for sharing their thoughts on the competition experience with the event organizers (through an interview).

Applying: Individuals or teams of up to 5 members can apply at www.library.illinois.edu/studentapps.  Teams of 3-5 members will be formed from all successful unpaired applicants during the Orientation session.  You must be a currently enrolled Undergraduate student on the UIUC campus to qualify.  Library employees are not eligible.

Applications will include: Student Name, Major, and a short description of why you are interested in mobile application design, what you see as the future of mobile computing, and what skills you would bring to ateam for this competition. We are looking for individuals who work well in teams and can foster creativity, ideas, and can showcase the ideas in a final presentation.  We hope to comprise teams from among broad discipline areas and experiences (including those who have no computing or programming knowledge).

Deadlines: Preference will be given to those applications received by November 17th, 2012.  A limited number of applicants will be accepted into the competition.  Successful applicants will be notified by January 10th of their acceptance, and orientation sessions will begin during the last 2 weeks of January, once classes are in session.  Finals of the competition will be completed by the end of February.

For more details on the Student competition, visit: www.library.illinois.edu/studentapps or contact Joseph Troy at jmtroy2@illinois.edu  217-300-0456

Note: Results from interviews or the project may be disseminated in journal articles, conference presentations, and/or scholarly book chapters and in websites. Ideas from the competition may be developed into apps by the Library. Additionally, results and articles may be deposited in the Library’s Institutional Repository (IDEALS).
