Are you interested in study abroad and federal government work? Do you want to earn some money?

The University of Illinois National and International Scholarships Program will be hosting an information session on National Security Education Program (NSEP) Boren undergraduate study abroad scholarships on Thursday, November 1 at 3:00 in room 514 at 807 S. Wright Street. We will provide participants with information about the program and tips on filling out competitive applications. The campus application deadline is January 16 for any study between May 2013 and May 2014 (all students are eligible for semester or year-long programs while some students may be eligible for summer intensive language programs as well). Students are encouraged to begin writing application drafts this fall.

The Boren provides study abroad scholarships of $6,000-$20,000 for a full academic year or $4,000-$10,000 for a semester for U.S. citizens to study in Asia, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East on almost any study abroad program. These are merit-based scholarships (approximately 1 in 5 eligible applicants receive awards including multiple University of Illinois students every year). In order to receive the scholarship, award winners must enter into a service agreement requiring that they attempt to work in a paid position for the federal government in an area related to national security—generally the Departments of State, Defense, Homeland Security, or the Intelligence Community within three years of graduation (deferrals possible/encouraged for graduate study). Winners also receive priority-hiring status. Further information is available at http://www.topscholars.illinois.edu/prestigious/nsep.html

Please direct questions to David Schug by email at topscholars@illinois.edu or at the fifth floor, Illini Union Bookstore Building, 807 South Wright Street.

All interested students are invited. This is a great opportunity for students of all levels to practice networking skills and begin to develop a connection with the deans of admission who will ultimately read their law school applications. Information about what to wear, a list of participating schools, and other details can be found on our blog here: http://publish.illinois.edu/prelawadvising/2012/10/16/law-fair-special-edition/ No registration necessary—bring your i-card for admission!

What do law school deans really look for in applicants? Get the inside scoop as admissions deans from Saint Louis University School of Law, DePaul University College of Law, and the University of Wisconsin Law School present Inside Law School Admissions on Monday, October 22 from 6:00-7:30 in Lincoln Hall 1027. What are common errors that the deans see in applications? Which personal statements are engaging, and which make the deans lose interest? What specific qualities can a candidate highlight that are helpful in admissions—and which aspects are not as helpful as you’d think? This is a great opportunity to get an inside view of what really goes on during the admissions process. This is a must-see event for any pre-law student! No registration necessary.

NEW: Yale Law School Admissions Webinar on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 12:00-1:00 pm online. Join us for this free webinar with an admissions professional from the Yale Admissions Office. We suggest that students review the Yale Admissions website and blog before the session at http://www.law.yale.edu/admissions/admissions.htm. Registration is required. We have not yet received the registration link from Yale but will post it on our event calendar here (http://illinois.edu/calendar/list/2508) as soon as we receive it. Students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines are especially welcome to join us, but students of all backgrounds are welcome. Film Screening and Leadership Workshop

Beauty Beneath the Dirt Film Screening & Leadership Workshop

Katherine Imp, a University of Illinois College of Law alum, will be hosting a leadership workshop on campus next Thursday, Oct. 18. Katherine will also be on campus that day to screen her award-winning documentary feature, Beauty Beneath the Dirt.

Before coming to Illinois, Katherine worked as a door-to-door fundraiser for a number of nationally-recognized, non-profit organizations and was consistently ranked as one of the best fundraisers in the country.  She then went on to work for Outward Bound, leading 30-day canoeing trips for at-risk youth. Though Katherine's formal education is in law, her background, entrepreneurial skills and creative interests led her to produce, market, and distribute the feature film,
Beauty Beneath the Dirt, while simultaneously practicing law at the prestigious Chicago law firm, Segal, McCambridge Singer & Mahoney, Ltd.. These endeavors prompted her to launch http://ringleaderkate.com, a blog dedicated to providing its audience with tools and tips to succeed, both personally and professionally.

  • Elected Positions: how-to effectively manage people that are your age...or older
  • Networking: how-to expand your 'inner circle' and stand out
  • Sales: how-to sell ... anything, from donation requests to ideas to films
  • Public Speaking: how-to, um, talk better
