Interested in Education and Studying Abroad?!?
Dear Students interested in teaching,
You may be interested in GLBL 298, a Global Studies seminar that travels to Ecuador this summer to offer a summer enrichment camp to children in a small, lower income community just outside of Quito. Hear more at an upcoming Information Session on Study Abroad options with an education-related focus: Tuesday, 1/29/13, 4:30pm, 176 Education Bldg.
Course Description: Course focuses on education as a factor in human and national development. Using Ecuador as a case study, we consider primary and secondary education achievement and the role of non-governmental organizations in the education sector. We work with an NGO to provide a summer enrichment opportunity for children in a small, lower income community. We read about and discuss what it means to be a global citizen and critically reflect on our impact in the community and the community’s impact on us.

Health Care Disparities
When: January 30, 2013 6:00pm
Location: Medical Sciences Building 2nd floor Auditorium
Join Dr. Monica Vela, Associate Dean for Multicultural Affairs and course director of “Health Care Disparities in America” at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in a presentation about health disparities. This “refers to population-specific differences in the presence of disease, health outcomes, quality of health care and access to health care services that exist across racial and ethnic groups. Many factors contribute to racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health disparities, including inadequate access to care, poor quality of care, community features (such as poverty and violence) and personal behaviors. These factors are often associated with underserved racial and ethnic minority groups, individuals who have experienced economic obstacles, those with disabilities and individuals living within medically underserved communities” (National Conference of State Legislatures 2012). Come to this workshop to learn how healthcare providers can make a difference.

Want to Help Out a Good Cause?!?
C-U at Home One Winter Night will be held on the U of I Quad on Friday, February 1. We invite you to come join us in showing your support of helping the homeless. It's an opportunity for U of I students, faculty and staff to FILL the Quad and raise awareness of those in our midst who sleep outside every night. The goal is to raise at least $50 for each participant and have them spend the entire night shivering outside, realizing a bit of what it would be like to be homeless in Champaign in the winter. It's a great opportunity to get your RSO, sorority, fraternity, floor, class, dorm, small group, church, or other group of friends involved for a great cause. Funds will be used to support C-U at Home as they strive to house and support many additional homeless residents in 2013.
